Screw You, Pentax
My Optio, like those before it, just died. No more on water pics unless I get another waterproof camera. There are many out there, most with more pixels than anyone in the world needs. I only have one real criteria for my next camera: the name Pentax cannot be on it.

I've had better luck with mine (a 43WR Optio), which I bought in 2005 and have used ever since. I finally bought a Panasonic DMC-TS1 last summer because of the great video capacity it has (IMO Panasonic has the best video quality for the home user). So far, so good.

A few here have bought the new canon d10, so far great reviews, and a fairly good video for what its worth

I've had a D10 for years and love it; but I wouldn't take it out on the water.

Silbs, the Optio is not to only camera that has problems with on-water use.
While some say that their camera works great very rarely they use it on water and get it wet.
I am on my 3rd Olympus 1030SW and I have to say that it is not the best offering from Olympus.
One kayak instructor went through 5 1030SW cameras (replaced under warranty) in one year!
I am happy with the results from my 1030SW (viewable at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnarlydog) but I wish for a camera that won't corrode so quickly!
I hear good things about the Panasonic TS1 and durability seems better than the last models from Olympus.
When my second 1030SW dies I probably will be looking at the TS1.

Corrosion isn't much of a problem here as we are on fresh water. But forget the camera, what's the lovely green kayak you're sculling?

the British racing green kayak is a Valley Nordkapp LV.
There are a couple of them around in my paddling circles (more pix of the pastel green and baby blue ones on my flick) and each owner can scull and roll beautifully in those low profile kayaks.

the new canon D10 is a waterproof model and much better than the olympus

the D10 produces images that are better than Olympus ones (sharper lens, better colors) but the lens is not as wide as the Olympus one.
My style of images are focused on a wide angle wiew (simulating an "involved" feeling) that Canon can't give me.
While I could use a DSLR with a massive housing its bulk certainly would not allow me to capture the images I do now.

My old reliable Olympus SW790 has lived and taken pictures for a few years now. Sounds like a post...

While I haven't used, or even looked at, all the possible cameras available, I remain very happy with my Pentax Optio 20. About 4 or 5 years ago I went from film (Pentax WR something) that was great--even though it was not water proof, rather merely weather resistant, I never had any problems with using it on the water and in the rain and splash. Now I have the Optio 20 and have had absolutely no problems.

I don't, however, use the camera as much as Silbs does his. I do carry it in a case, and bout the silcone cover for it. I am super careful about making sure it is dry when opening the battery cover, and then making sure it is properly locked afterward.

Not sure what the cause of death is but will miss your photos. Glad you have them saved on that hard drive, and backed up.
